SUNDAY REFLECTION (Jn 6:60-69)

 


      The gospel for today highlights the challenging nature of Jesus' teachings, and the importance of faith in truly understanding and accepting them.

      Many of Jesus' own disciples found his words about the necessity of his body and blood for eternal life to be "hard" or difficult to accept. This shows that we humans tend to struggle with concepts that go beyond our natural understanding while Jesus’ teachings often had a deeper spiritual meaning that only Jesus or God knows. This also shows that faith is necessary in order to fully accept Jesus’ teachings, and that it is not enough to simply hear the words - we must also be willing to put our faith in them.

     Ultimately, this gospel reminds us that following Jesus requires willingness and faith to understand the challenging truths of his teachings, and to rely on God's Spirit to guide our understanding. It's a call to a deeper level of commitment, beyond the surface level of discipleship.

The Gospel today tells about faith and honor. What does it mean to even have honor? What is honor, anyway? Honor is to have high respect. Every one of us has a certain degree of honor that is much like dignity. We all have it and we take care of it. But to have such a high degree of respect, we have to earn it. You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. - Luke 10:27

“Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?... He said in reply ‘ You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself’…. ‘ He said to Jesus:  ‘And who is my neighbor?”  Lk 10: 25-37 I just want to focus on some of the lines above. Let us little by little discuss it briefly. First, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” The scholar in the Gospel had a vision to have an eternal life.  This is the problem today, do we, ourselves, wish and dream of having an eternal life? We are so bombarded of the ideals of the earthly world. It tells us that: The number of significant figures we had made in our bank accounts, are more important than God. "Which of the two did his father’s will?” - Matthew 21:31

Today’s Gospel tells us how our actions are more important than words. Some people are afraid of making promises, although at the end of the day, they choose to fulfill what they are asked to do without saying a word. However, others are less worried or not worried at all at keeping them and tend to struggle in doing what is asked of them. Same situation goes to how aware we are about the will of the Lord. We know everything about the will of the Father. However, are we doing what God has told us to do? Going to church every day doesn’t mean that you have more chances of entering the Kingdom of God than those who seldom visit. Even if you know a lot about what God wants you to do, but not actually doing it, you are a like the second son in the Gospel. Jesus wants to tell us that God appreciates not only our words, but more importantly, the actions we will be doing, for example, after going home from mass.
